Chiswick sits within both the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow and is located in West London on the River Thames.  Consequently it is home to a number of rowing and boating clubs and during the Annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities the towpath is full of spectators as the finishing post is close to Chiswick Bridge.Chiswick High Road is the main shopping area and contains a mixture of chains, independent stores and supermarkets and a plethora of restaurants, coffee shops and bars, including the Michelin starred Hedone restaurant.  Devonshire Road and Turnham Green Terrace have a number of boutiques and some very popular independent coffee shops, like Tamp and the recently opened Chief.For families, Chiswick is a haven, with some truly fantastic nurseries and schools, both state and independent.  There are plenty of activities to keep children entertained from the private, family club Maggie and Rose, to the well maintained parks and playgrounds dotted around the vicinity, family-friendly restaurants and leisure centres and gyms.Transport links in Chiswick are numerous with three tube stations and two overground stations as well as excellent bus routes.  The A4/M4 is easily accessible providing great commuter links.  Subsequently many large firms including GSK, Worley Parsons, and British Standards Institution have offices nearby making this part of London a great place to live and work.

The name Acton is derived from the old English meaning Oak Farm and was an ancient village that became part of London.  Acton itself sits within three different London Boroughs, Hounslow, Ealing and Hammersmith and Fulham.Many well-known businesses started up in Acton, including T.Wall & Sons (Wall’s Sausage and Wall’s Ice cream, Wilkinson Sworn and also Waitrose (initially Waite, Rose and Taylor).Today Acton High Street remains a busy shopping area, with many national retailers and some independent shops in the area.  The area known as the “Mount” on Acton High Street (close to Morrison’s) hosts a market three times a week and the recently refurbished Swimming Pool is home to a number of competitive teams.  The Park Club and Virgin Active gyms are just off Acton High Street.

Ealing is a major district of West London and the name Ealing is thought to be derived from the Saxon word of “Gillingas” meaning place of the people associated with Gilla.  Over the centuries this changed to “Illing”, “Gilling”, and “Ylling” until eventually becoming Ealing.Ealing is probably best known for Ealing Film Studios which are the oldest in the world and produced the world famous Ealing comedies.  These included The LadyKillers and The Lavender Hill Mob and more recently Notting Hill, films.Transport wise, Ealing is in a fantastic position with both tube and overground stations and will be one of the stations serviced by Crosslink (not yet open).

The name Shepherds Bush is thought to have originated from the use of the common land as a resting place for shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market.Now probably best known for the Westfield shopping Centre (which is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe) and the BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane.  The Beatles recorded their first ever BBC broadcast at Lime Grove Studios in 1963 (now demolished) and a number of businesses including Endemol TV Company (Big Brother) and Jellycat (soft toys) are based here.Shepherds Bush Green was redeveloped in 2012 and features large rotating football sculptures that were commissioned to commemorate the hosting of the 1908 Summer Olympics football in Shepherds Bush.The Shepherds Bush Empire was home to a number of BBC shows including This is Your Life and is now a music venue that has hosted acts including Rolling Stones and David Bowie.  Bush Hall is a smaller venue which has showcased REM and Scissor Sisters in the past.

The Grove Park area of Chiswick is to the south of the A4, close to the River Thames and is a particularly picturesque are of West London.  Serviced by overground trains rather than the tube, from Chiswick station it is only 30 mins to Waterloo.Chiswick House, reputed to be the finest remaining example of Neo-Palladian architecture in London, is situated in Grove Park and dates back from 1729.  Visitors can enjoy the extensive gardens and open spaces within the grounds and view the beautiful Rysback paintings contained within the house. For children, as well as the playground at Chiswick House, there is a large play area at Dukes Meadow a short walk away as well as Chiswick Pool in Edensor Road.Plenty of pubs and restaurants are nestled within Grove Park and together with great schools, this makes it a great area of young families.

The Bedford Park area is described as the worlds’ first garden suburb and is located in the North East of Chiswick.  24 acres of land, containing many fine trees were purchased by Jonathan Carr in 1875 and together with firstly the architect Edward Godwin and later the acclaimed Richard Norman Shaw, created the beautiful houses within Bedford Park. Much of Bedford Park is now in a conservation area and most of the early buildings are Grade II listed.Bedford Park is within easy reach of the shops and amenities on Chiswick High Road and is situated with Turnham Green tube station to one side and Chiswick Park tube station to the other.The annual Bedford Park Festival which runs over two weeks in June is a fantastic event which encompasses concerts, art exhibitions, poetry readings, children and community events and culminates in the Fete, which is extremely popular.
