Shepherds Bush Area Guide
The name Shepherds Bush is thought to have originated from the use of the common land as a resting place for shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market.
Now probably best known for the Westfield shopping Centre (which is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe) and the BBC TV Centre at Wood Lane. The Beatles recorded their first ever BBC broadcast at Lime Grove Studios in 1963 (now demolished) and a number of businesses including Endemol TV Company (Big Brother) and Jellycat (soft toys) are based here.
Shepherds Bush Green was redeveloped in 2012 and features large rotating football sculptures that were commissioned to commemorate the hosting of the 1908 Summer Olympics football in Shepherds Bush.
The Shepherds Bush Empire was home to a number of BBC shows including This is Your Life and is now a music venue that has hosted acts including Rolling Stones and David Bowie. Bush Hall is a smaller venue which has showcased REM and Scissor Sisters in the past.
